Perfect Crown Writing Tips

Perfect Crown (a k-drama on Disney) provides some great examples for writing tips. An illegitimate chaebol heir and a Grand Prince in a fictional 21st-century constitutional monarchy agree to a marriage contract. Thus, it has fake dating and forced proximity, two of my favorite tropes. As they fight to surmount political intrigue, feelings deepen. Beware, there are probably spoilers ahead.
The Main Characters and Their Arc
The Female Protagonist: the illegitimate chaebol heir Seong Hui-ju, played by IU, is capable and solves her own problems. She’s been dismissed all of her life because of being illegitimate, especially by her father. Yet she keeps proving that she excels (in school, at running her company etc.) She’s a bit of a loose cannon. She also has a temper, so she’s not perfect. She gains your sympathy as the underdog and for never giving up.
The Male Protagonist: The Grand Prince I-an, played by Byeon Woo-seok, is second in line to the throne, after his brother, the King, and, then later, the King’s son. He also excels. Instead of being allowed to excel, however, he’s had to suppress his desire to excel so that he doesn’t outshine his brother. His father is equally horrible, always cutting him done. His father even changes his name to make it clear that he is to be passive and to keep the peace.
Perfect Crown Writing Tips: Setting your two love interests with similar traumatic back stories (but opposite reactions) helps to frame your character’s arc so that they develop in a complementary fashion. In the beginning, I-an appears more passive, and she encourages him to fight. When she is disrespected because of her social status, Prince I-an stands up for her and changes the rules so that she can compete on equal terms.
The Second Lead and Perfect Crown Writing Tips for Showing He’s Not The One
What I also really liked was how, from the beginning, the writer of Perfect Crown showed how the Prime Minister, played by Noh Sang-hyun, was not the soulmate for Hui-ju. He is the RomCom Bellamy, or Wrong Guy/Girl.
In the first episode, she wears a red outfit–a color reserved to royals at the palace–to attend a celebration of the young king’s birthday at the Palace. She wears red anyway, to catch attention and to drum up sales for her corporate empire. The other attendees at the event ostracize her and talk dismissively about her (see above for how to score sympathy for your character as the underdog). The PM approaches her because they are close friends since school days. He definitely wins points for that, but he also chastises her for wearing red. That’s kind of understandable, especially from his position as the Prime Minister. But, in a clever parallel, Prince I-an wears a hunting robe to the birthday party, which is an outfit that is also considered inappropriate attire.
In the next episode, she wins a business award and an ostentatious hat, which she asks the young king to place on her head. It is a sweet exchange with the young king, Prince I-an, and herself. The hat, which has various strings dangling down from it, clearly delights Hui-ju. However, when she meets the Prime Minister for lunch, he, embarrassed, asks her to take it off. For me, this was a clearer sign, because it felt like he wanted her to dim her joy, like when someone tells you that you’re laughing or speaking too loud, or calling too much attention to yourself etc.
And of course, there’s the main point that the Prime Minister has had years to declare his interest. Why didn’t he? It’s probably because of his political career and his concern about her illegitimacy. In contrast, Prince I-an is willing to marry her. He has also liked her for years. (One of my favorite scenes was the flashback to school, where both boys admit they like her). But even in those flashbacks, you can see why Prince I-an is the perfect mate. She complains about the unfair system, where everybody else is allowed to practice their archery but her, and Prince I-an fixes it. The PM tries to protect her as well, but he doesn’t challenge the unfair system.
Perfect Crown Writing Tips: Subtly show how the second lead doesn’t understand the main female character, and in fact, wants to change her, while the main romantic lead likes her as she is. This also manages to showcase how the two leads are perfect for each other.
More Writing Tips for a Second Lead
If you’re looking for more tips on how to show that the Second Lead is not the right one for the main character, please also check out my previous post entitled The RomCom Bellamy in ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE – Kathy Rewrites. But as I’ve learned from k-dramas, it can create a lot of tension to make the second lead a worthy contender for the female protagonist, if you’re looking to foster Second Lead Syndrome.

My Rock Star Neighbor Publication Day!
I am so thrilled to announce that today is happy publication day for My Rock Star Neighbor, my fake dating, friends-to-enemies, rock star romantic comedy!

Thank you to these rock star reviewers!
And the first reviews have been fabulous! Thank you to Jill, a librarian, for this review:
I love a good rockstar romance! This was so much fun! I was looking for something light and fun to read … and this perfectly fit the bill! I love any books that deal with the glamorous rockstar world and this was a great choice. Great characters, great chemistry, and lots of fun rock star action! Be sure to check this one out you won’t regret it. – Jill (a librarian)
And thank you to Donna for this review:
Maddie’s a journalist for a local New York City newspaper. She’s working on a story about corruption in the city official offices, but finding the culprit is proving tricky.
When Maddie’s musician neighbor Nick plays music until all hours, it drives her crazy, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t enjoy his friendship. When Nick is photographed with Maddie, she’s mistaken for being his girlfriend.
Now the pair are fake dating. Nick’s helping Maddie in her investigation and she’s giving him a cover as his girlfriend. But maybe there is more to this that neither is admitting.
Kathy Strobos’s stories tend to use the city backdrop as a side character and the city really sparkles in this latest instalment. Late night meetings on the fire escape, singing at the local bar, eating dumplings with friends all add to the charming setting. There’s a whole whodunnit happening in the story, and Nick is as much of that part of the story as his own backstory. I loved how this cute couple support each other, put each others needs at the forefront and fit seemlessly in with each other’s friends and family. It’s another cutie from the author

And thank you to Lisa for this review:
Fun New York City Rom – Com with Wonderful Characters, Setting and Even a Mystery
This was a great book from start to finish – all of the characters were likable and well developed and both the will they / won’t they fake to real romantic plot along with the mystery Maddie is hoping to solve for her news story kept the pages turning and I couldn’t put the book down. I enjoyed the dual POV so the reader understands both of their growing feelings as well as their “found family” group of friends who were all there to support them. The New York background was also fun to revisit as a former resident – I felt like I was back in the heart of the city again. It is part of a series but it easily read as a standalone. I look forward to reading the next book from this author.

Behind the Scenes: Rock Star RomCom

I want to take you behind the scenes for my rock star, fake dating, frenemies-to-lovers romcom, My Rock Star Neighbor!
Here’s the blurb:
When a rock star and a reporter fake date to bury a scandal, will true love be the real story?
Nick: I do my best songwriting while playing my guitar on the fire escape. Unfortunately, my in-bed-at-ten next-door neighbor, Maddie, is not a fan of my music. She clambers out on the fire escape to yell at me about making “noise.” In bunny slippers, no less. But then she trips and falls into my arms. That photo of Maddie plastered all over me hits the papers, just as my dream recording company wants to sign my band. Which is a problem, because an obsessed fan is claiming that I’m her boyfriend and now the media is blowing up that I’m two-timing them both. Good-bye recording contract, unless…
Maddie: I’m supposed to cover the story. Not be the story! But when Nick begs me to fake date, I can’t resist the chance to be Nick’s girlfriend—even if fake—the opposite of my life as a city desk reporter. But my ex said I’m a terrible kisser, and there’s no way I want Mr. Hot Rock Star saying the same thing. Hence, clause 11 in our contract: There will be absolutely no physical contact.
Nick: When Maddie receives a threatening photo of the two of us with an X over her face, my desire to protect her suddenly feels all too real. It’s either a troll or her undercover investigation has been compromised. With both our careers at stake, is breaking up the only way to keep Maddie safe?
As you know, when I write a book, I try to walk around New York City and visit the places I describe in my book, although of course some places are fictional, like the Books & Banter cafe.
Here is a photo of the Sticky Rice Cafe which is near where Maddie and Nick live on the lower east side:

Here’s a photo from the neighborhood where Maddie’s office is located:

And here are some photos from the Chinese New Year parade that Maddie covers as a reporter, with Nick by her side:

It was raining that day. And in the book, I describe how the streets are pretty with the papers from the poppers:

And here’s the lion that guards the park near them:

Here’s a photo of rowboats on Central Park:

I hope you enjoyed this behind the scenes tour. You can also buy My Rock Star Neighbor directly from me:

I’m so excited for this release. Here’s a video of me discussing it:
I also had a great time meeting readers at the Brooklyn Book Festival! Here I am with our club president, author Katy Berritt!

Remember that you can always buy signed paperbacks with bookmarks directly from me at my little shop:
Hope you have a great week!

My Rock Star Neighbor!
I am thrilled to announce that I’m publishing a new book, My Rock Star Neighbor, on October 10. Here is Nick and Maddie’s story!

Here is the blurb:
When a wary rock star and a cynical reporter fake date to bury a scandalous rumor, will true love be exposed as the real story?
Nick: I do my best songwriting while playing my guitar on the fire escape. Unfortunately, my in-bed-at-ten next-door neighbor, Maddie, is not a fan of my music. A closed-door, friends-to-lovers, rock star romantic comedy set in New York City!! My Rock Star Neighbor is the 4th book in the New York Spark series!
My Rock Star Neighbor is the fourth book in the New York Spark Series!
If you’ve read My Book Boyfriend, you first met Maddie and Nick there. You may remember that Maddie complained because Nick was playing his guitar at all hours of the night.
“My rock star neighbor wrote me a song. See?” Maddie asks. “It’s dedicated to my neighbor who always complains.”
“You’re someone’s muse,” Jing says.
“That’s so sweet,” Bella says.
“Not really. At the end of the note, he said that instead of getting soundproofing, he used his funds to hire another music editor.” Maddie snorts. “But he hopes I’ll forgive him because he dedicated a song to me.”
I can’t wait for you to read Nick and Maddie’s story!

Most of the book bloggers have reviewed my other books, so I thank them for their continued trust in my writing. I’m glad I’ve found my readers 🙂
Thanks to Tizi’s Book Review for this review!
“Picking up a book written by Kathy Strobos for me always feels like picking up a book filled with happiness. Because she always manages to write great stories with great characters but also realistic and just real characters.”
I had high expectations of this book, as I absolutely devoured the previous books of this series and other books of this author… I absolutely loved this book, the author did a wonderful job with this story about love, respect and courage about letting fear miss you out on perhaps the best possible thing.”

A “festive romantic comedy”
Thank you to Carla Loves to Read for this review:
I’ve not read anything by Kathy Strobos, in fact I had not heard of this author before, but I love Christmas romance, so decided to give this book a try and I am so glad I did. I loved everything about it. The two main characters, Iris and Sebastian stole my heart. I wanted to meet them, to get to know them, and spend time doing all the wonderful things they did over the festive season. The characters are all wonderful, especially the friends group and their families. There is mega chemistry between these two and I loved their banter. One thing I love about Christmas stories is the festive activities and there were a lot in this book.
And she also wrote: “This is the first book of hers that I’ve read, but it definitely won’t be my last. “

My Book Boyfriend – Another Lovely Review
My Book Boyfriend also has this lovely review from Gail A.:
“Kathy Strobos’ My Book Boyfriend is a delightful romantic comedy that intertwines themes of community, passion for literature, and unexpected love. Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City, the novel introduces readers to Lily, a dedicated librarian and co-founder of a cherished community garden. Her world is disrupted when she discovers that the attractive man she met in the library, Rupert Evans, is the developer planning to demolish her beloved garden to build a new building. This revelation sets the stage for an engaging enemies-to-lovers narrative.
Strobos crafts a compelling story that balances humor with heartfelt moments. Lily’s fierce commitment to her community and her love for books make her a relatable and endearing protagonist. Rupert, initially perceived as the antagonist, reveals layers of complexity as the story unfolds, challenging Lily’s and the readers’ initial impressions.
The novel’s charm is amplified by its setting. The community garden serves as a symbol of unity and resilience, highlighting the importance of green spaces in urban environments. Strobos’ depiction of New York City captures both its bustling energy and the small pockets of tranquility that residents cherish.
The chemistry between Lily and Rupert is palpable, with their witty banter and evolving relationship providing a satisfying romantic arc. The narrative also delves into themes of personal growth, as both characters confront their biases and learn to see the world from each other’s perspectives.
Supporting characters add depth to the story, enriching the community aspect and providing moments of levity. The plot, while following familiar romantic comedy tropes, offers enough unique elements to keep readers engaged.”
It’s available in e-book, paperback and audiobook at your favorite retailer.

I had so much fun talking to Roma about writing Love Is an Art. Please check out my interview with Roma Cordon, and check out her novel Bewitching a Highlander!
Ciao! Caper Crush is published in Italian!
Here is the Caper Crush blurb in Italian (the title has been translated into something more similar to My Mischievous Love:

Ciao! Let’s Talk
Yesterday we finally had a beautiful spring day in New York City, and some cherry blossoms were in full bloom in Central Park. What have you been watching or reading? Ciao for now!

Book Recommendations for Black History Month
Here are some fun book recommendations for Black History Month. I really loved reading these books, so I hope you enjoy them too! I’m starting with two romances and then one I read for my Book Club, which was one of my favorite book club reads of last year.
Take a Hint, Dani Brown

Danika Brown knows what she wants: professional success, academic renown, and an occasional roll in the hay to relieve all that career-driven tension. But romance? Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt. Romantic partners, whatever their gender, are a distraction at best and a drain at worst. So Dani asks the universe for the perfect friend-with-benefits—someone who knows the score and knows their way around the bedroom.
When brooding security guard Zafir Ansari rescues Dani from a workplace fire drill gone wrong, it’s an obvious sign: PhD student Dani and ex-rugby player Zaf are destined to sleep together. But before she can explain that fact, a video of the heroic rescue goes viral. Now half the internet is shipping #DrRugbae—and Zaf is begging Dani to play along. Turns out, his sports charity for kids could really use the publicity. Lying to help children? Who on earth would refuse?
Dani’s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zaf’s secretly a hopeless romantic—and he’s determined to corrupt Dani’s stone-cold realism. Before long, he’s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his… um, thighs.
Suddenly, the easy lay Dani dreamed of is more complex than her thesis. Has her wish backfired? Is her focus being tested? Or is the universe just waiting for her to take a hint?
*Zaf is such a green flag hero! And you know, I love my green flag men.
The Neighbor Favor

Shy, bookish, and admittedly awkward, Lily Greene has always felt inadequate compared to the rest of her accomplished family, who strive for Black excellence. She dreams of becoming an editor of children’s books but has been frustratingly stuck in the nonfiction division for years without a promotion in sight. Lily finds escapism in her correspondences with her favorite fantasy author. What begins as two lonely people connecting over e-mail turns into a tentative friendship and possibly something else Lily won’t let herself entertain–until he ghosts her.
Months later, still crushed but determined to take charge of her life, Lily seeks a date to her sister’s wedding. And the perfect person to help her is Nick Brown, her charming, attractive new neighbor, whom she feels drawn to for unexplainable reasons. Little does she know that Nick is an author–her favorite fantasy author.
Nick, who has his reasons for using a pen name and for pushing people away, soon realizes that the beautiful, quiet woman from down the hall is the same Lily he fell in love with over e-mail months ago. Unwilling to complicate things even more between them, he agrees to set her up with someone else, though this simple favor between two neighbors is anything but–not when he can’t get her off his mind.
*Loved the email exchange. I was so invested in this couple, and I couldn’t put it down. Ripped Bodice recommended this, and I’m so glad I bought it. I’m excited to read the next book. I recommended this on BookDNA as one of my favorite reads of 2024. It’s hard to choose just three reads.
Sankofa

Anna is at a stage of her life when she’s beginning to wonder who she really is. She has separated from her husband, her daughter is all grown up, and her mother—the only parent who raised her—is dead.
Searching through her mother’s belongings one day, Anna finds clues about the African father she never knew. His student diaries chronicle his involvement in radical politics in 1970s London. Anna discovers that he eventually became the president—some would say dictator—of a small nation in West Africa. And he is still alive…
When Anna decides to track her father down, a journey begins that is disarmingly moving, funny, and fascinating. Like the metaphorical bird that gives the novel its name, Sankofa expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present to address universal questions of race and belonging, the overseas experience for the African diaspora, and the search for a family’s hidden roots.
*A very engrossing story about identity and finding yourself.

Peek into Lily’s New York Life!

Peek into Lily’s New York life! I realized I never did a behind-the-scenes tour of all the places that inspired the scenes in My Book Boyfriend, my enemies-to-lovers, librarian-saving-community-garden vs. developer-who-wants-to-bulldoze-it romantic comedy. But I did previously include photos of the community garden inspiration! Here’s the short blurb: Lily loves her community garden. Rupert wants to bulldoze it for community housing. When feelings grow, will they blossom or turn to rubble?
Here’s the My Book Boyfriend cover – click on the image below for links to your favorite retailers!

So where should we start? She lives in a small walk-up in a brownstone, and she works in a library on the Upper West Side. I used the St. Agnes library branch as inspiration. Here’s a photo:

She goes on a date to the New York Public library gala, which doesn’t go quite as well as expected:
When my date at the ball ditches me to flirt with another woman, and Rupert, my enemy – the hot shot developer who plans to bulldoze my community garden—asks me to dance . . .
“You look like you’re plotting mischief.” Rupert appears by my side as I watch my date dancing with another woman.
Why does Rupert have to be so attractive?
“He’s a fool,” Rupert says.
It looks like I’m the fool.

Here’s a photo of a New York Public Library lion all bedecked for the holidays:

And she hangs out with her friends at a fictional cafe called Banter & Books, which is filled with plants, books, coffee, tea, cookies and friends 🙂
Here are some photos of the community garden inspiration (inspired by the Elizabeth Street Garden):

We may have had too much fun blurring faces I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek into Lily’s New York life 🙂

Thank You to My Readers!

I’m closing out 2024 with a huge THANK YOU to my readers. I love writing stories, and it means the world to me that my stories have found an audience. I feel a great sense of pride in what I accomplished this year (and most of it, before July):
1. One of the highlights of my year is always the Brooklyn Book Festival. This year, two readers who bought my books in 2023, returned to buy more books. In the rain!! And there’s no greater compliment than that. It really makes me so happy. Here’s me with Michael Molloy, another author.

2. Published My Secret Snowflake, my holiday, workplace romantic comedy. Thank you to all my reviewers. I’m so happy with the reviews. “My favorite so far in this series!” – Thank you to Lisa M.!

3. Translated my books into German, Spanish, Turkish, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese! It was so great to correspond with my translators too. Hopefully one day I can meet them in person.

4. Published my first audiobook — My Book Boyfriend narrated by Eric Altheide and Stacy Gonzalez.

5. Produced and published my own audiobook of My Scavenger Hunt for Hearts, read aloud by me. (Thank you to Derek Doepker for the audiobook course).

6. Opened my own Shopify store and Story Origin store (for international sales). I really enjoyed wrapping the paperback orders and adding all the little gifts. I added some miniatures, like a holiday miniature shopping bag, a miniature snowman cookie that I made, and glittery paper snowflakes!

7. Held a book club or Leserunde in German (!) on Mein Book-Boyfriend on Lovely Books. So much fun! Thank you to Kris Alice for all the marketing help and for recommending this.

8. Discovered that more of my books are in the New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Public Library.
9. Sent My Rock Star Neighbor off to my critique partners. I so enjoy my conversations with my critique partners, Giulia Skye and Ellen Gilman, throughout the year. I couldn’t do this without them.
10. Attended the RNA Conference. I made more author friends and caught up with friends in person. I met up with Giulia in London for a wonderful talk.
Thank you to all my author friends, my friends, and my family!
But most of all, thank you to my readers for an exciting year.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2025!
